About DMI

DMI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit built to spotlight local rising talent and give performers real opportunities.
We’re creating a movement with stages to perform, programs to grow, and a community that rides for its artists. No matter your style or background, there’s a place for your voice here.

The DJWHAT! Music Initiative (DMI) began as a vision inside a small, growing music venue — a vision to create real opportunities for local rising talent who didn’t have access to stages, support, or community backing. What started as DJWHAT!’s personal mission to build a home for live music quickly evolved into something bigger: a movement dedicated to empowering artists, uplifting the community, and giving creators a place to grow.

Before DMI was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the work had already begun. DJWHAT!’s venue opened its doors to musicians of all styles — full bands, solo performers, DJs, comedians, storytellers, anyone trying to get their foot in the door. The space became a hub for creativity, collaboration, and grassroots energy. Artists who had been overlooked found a stage. New performers found confidence. The community found a place to gather around music again.

As the momentum grew, so did the mission. DMI was created to formalize that purpose:

  • Providing performance opportunities to artists who need a platform.
  • Supporting rising talent with programs, development, and community-led events.
  • Creating spaces where artists can grow, collaborate, and feel supported.
  • Bringing people together through music-centered events that strengthen the culture around the arts.

DMI is built on hustle, community, and heart — not big budgets or corporate backing. Everything we’ve done has been brick-by-brick, show-by-show, volunteer-by-volunteer. Because of that, we operate with a level of authenticity and connection that artists feel the moment they walk in.

Today, DMI continues to grow as both a venue home and a nonprofit mission, working to make sure no artist feels like they have to leave their hometown just to be seen. Whether you’re a performer, supporter, partner, or visitor — you’re part of this story, and part of what comes next.
